This May, our “Fish” of the Month is the algae eating shrimp. Often referred to as “Amano Shrimp,” these inverts get their nickname from one of the most famed aquarists of all time, Takashi Amano. In August of last year, Mr. Amano passed away, but not without leaving a lasting legacy on the aquarium community.
As a talented aquascaper, Mr. Amano discovered how efficient these shrimp are at eating algae off the foliage of aquatic plants. Now, they are a must have for any planted aquarium.
Not only are they efficient at controlling algae, but they are well suited to community aquariums. Algae eating shrimp are excellent at escaping predators, and are also very hardy and disease resistant. Unlike algae eating fish, shrimp add little to your tanks biological load, meaning you can add as many as you want!
